MAYANGAN – Sampah memiliki nilai ekonomis.

(famydecta/humas)

Waste has economic value. Who would have thought that unused goods could bring in a turnover of hundreds of millions of rupiah every year. Fabric cardboard casings can be transformed into pencil cases; patchworks patented as ethnic pillowcases, and even used crackle bags can be beautiful brooches.

This is the picture conveyed by the women who are members of the Waste Care Association (Papesa), during the 2019 National Waste Care Day (HPSN), which was entitled “Manage waste for a clean, healthy and valuable life” on Friday (8/3) at the Landfill Bestari, Jalan Anggrek.

Head of the Environment Agency (DLH) Budi Krisyanto said this activity was one of the media commitments of Probolinggo Municipality and the community in the HSPN 2019 commemoration. “At the same time, it aims to strengthen the dissemination of education in the community about waste and the benefits of waste to be valuable,” he said.

Waste management is not only the responsibility of the government but also requires the participation of various parties such as the business world, the private sector, environmental partners and the community.

That morning, Mayor Habib Hadi symbolically handed over the Health Insurance BPJS card to DLH employees. Attended the event were Vice Mayor HMS Subri, Commander of Military District 0820 Lieutenant Colonel Inf Imam Wibowo, Head of Probolinggo BPJS Mirah Estherini, representative of Bank Jatim and Probolinggo Municipality officials.

On that occasion, Mayor Habib Hadi reminded the people to participate together with the government to care about waste and the environment. If you want the city to be free of waste in the next five years, said Habib Hadi, it is impossible to realize if the people do not care about it.

The mayor regretted that there were still many people who were still lacking in environmental care. In the corner of the city, there are a lot of garbage dumps because of the lack of public awareness, along with the addition of residents and settlements that produce waste.

“Manage waste properly; it is not a dirty thing but has economic value. That is my hope and the government. Community groups have been able to implement the economic value of waste. They succeed because of their own efforts if you do not want to take benefit of it, and then the opportunity to use the economic value would be wasted. Therefore, the waste problem cannot be overcome by the government itself; but it needs community involvement,” explained Habib Hadi.

The mayor believes DLH and its employees have done their best in handling waste. He also hopes that in his leadership there will be no obstacles, especially the problem of garbage because waste can be processed to bring benefits and economy to the community.

“Don’t just blame the government, but by working together we can overcome the problem of garbage. Starting today, make your own mind, if we careless on waste, it is a shame to ourselves. Gradually, you can definitely come from now to do the best step,” said the number-one person in Probolinggo City.

The activity was ended by the visit of Mayor Habib Hadi and Vice Mayor Subri to the booths of DLH environmental partners and the Adiwiyata schools. At the booths, the mayor was amazed by the results of the creation that could produce economic value. The results of the recycling further strengthened Habib Hadi’s commitment to further move the community to manage waste.
