A sense of empathy of Mayor Hadi Zainal Abidin was moved to see the sacrifice of a young man who was willing to become a garbage collector in his neighborhood to help his parents. Sunday (10/3) at around 20.30, after attending a meeting, Habib Hadi met Jakaria Sobirin at his home, in RT 4 RW IV, Kebonsari Wetan Sub-District, Kanigaran District.

Jakaria Sobirin or commonly called Jaka was born from a mediocre economic family. He must work hard so he can go to school and help his family. Jaka is a grade XII student of SMK Negeri 2 Probolinggo City.

For about 30 minutes, Habib Hadi had a conversation with Jaka and his father, Wasis. Since he was in junior high school, Jaka has helped his father as a garbage collector. At first, he only accompanied his father while working, but Jaka finally had to intervene himself when his father fell ill. The young man born on May 2, 2000, also took the garbage of his neighbors in RT 4 and RT 5 in RW IV.

When dumping garbage away from his neighbors, Jaka uses his parents’ pedicabs. What makes people around him salute is that Jaka is not ashamed of doing the job. Jaka is not embarrassed because he did so to ease the burden on his parents. Jaka is aware of the hard work being done is also for his future.

If he does not take over the duties of his father, when the father is sick, Jaka is afraid that residents will be disappointed because the garbage must accumulate. Even though Wasis has recovered, Jaka still works as a garbage collector. Meanwhile, Wasis is now working as a handyman.

Jaka removes the neighbor’s garbage after school or at night. From every house that uses his services, Jaka gets a salary of Rp. 20,000 per month. That money is what he uses to pay for school and the rest is given to his parents.

What Jaka has done has helped Probolinggo Municipality manage waste in the community. At present the local government is indeed thinking hard to manage waste, the amount of which is so extraordinary in line with the increasing number of settlements in the city.

Been a garbage collector for the last two years, Jaka admitted that the problem is equipment. The used pedicab does not fit to transport waste so he has to go back and forth twice.

While at Jaka’s house, Habib Hadi stressed that the work Jaka had done could not be underestimated. “My first word is a salute to him. This is part of the participation of young people to save the earth. Young people have extraordinary souls, don’t feel ashamed. I really appreciate the spirit of environmental care,” said Habib Hadi.

To Jaka, the mayor also provides an insight of waste recycling. Waste that is underestimated, said Habib Hadi, can be an expensive item should it being managed properly.

“I will strive to provide support to improve Jaka’s role in preserving the environment. God willing, the government will help by providing a garbage cart. Jaka can also motivate the environment and his friends that this work should not be underestimated and on the other hand, they can help their parents,” explained Habib Hadi.

Mayor’s attention and visit are out of Jaka’s mind. He hopes that in the future he can be better in helping the government and society. The garbage carts that are obtained later will make the job faster, no need to go back and forth twice but enough once.

On that occasion, Habib Hadi had seen the pedicabs used by Jaka every day for taking garbage. The mayor also provided assistance in the form of cash to Jaka to fix his pedicab. “The cart will be available when this year’s APBD changes, God willing,” he said.
